Hobbs State Park hosting eclipse preview in March

After learning about the eclipse, visitors will have access to powerful telescopes to view Jupiter and other celestial bodies.

ROGERS, Ark. — Hobbs State Park in Rogers is gearing up to host a free astronomy program in March that will include a preview of the upcoming solar eclipse.

The event is slated for Saturday, March 9, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the park’s visitor center, which will include a preview of the upcoming solar eclipse.

The program will start indoors from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with information on the total solar eclipse, which is set to happen on April 8.

"Instructions cover what to expect in NWA, how to prepare for viewing, and specific points to watch for during the eclipse," Hobbs State Park said in a release.

After the informational period, and weather permitting, outdoor viewing will begin at around 6:30 p.m. Visitors will have the chance to observe Jupiter and view constellations Taurus, Orion, and Canis Major, as well as other astronomical wonders, such as double stars, star clusters, the Pleiades, and nebulae.

The Sugar Creek Astronomical Society will provide telescopes for guests to use during the event.

Hobbs State Park says that participants may want to bring a flashlight covered with a red cloth or red balloon and a folding chair. Binoculars and star charts are also suggested.

Hobbs says that the event is recommended for ages eight and older and that reservations not required.

For more information, contact the park’s visitor center at 479-789-5000.
