SEQUOYAH COUNTY, Okla. — Human remains were discovered in a wooded area near Lake Tenkiller, according to the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office (SCSO).
Deputies said on Friday, Nov. 8 that at around 12 p.m., they along with Cherokee Nation Marshals, the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office and the district attorney's office were conducting a search after a deer hunter reported finding human bones.
The remains consist of "several human bones," Sequoyah County Sheriff Larry Lane said, and appear to be "pretty old and have likely been here several years."
The bones were found scattered over a 200 yard area and Lane said deputies are hoping to recover enough to positively identify the remains.
"The search will continue as long as weather permits," a post on the sheriff's office Facebook page reads.
