SHADY POINT, Okla. — Deputies shot and injured a man on Jan. 20 after he had drawn a firearm, according to a press release from the Leflore County Sheriff's Office (LCSO).
Deputies from the sheriff's office responded to a domestic situation where a man was reportedly intoxicated and having suicidal ideations, the press release said.
Once the deputies arrived on the scene near Calhoun Road and Roy Monks Road in Shady Point, the person who called said the man "loaded up several firearms before leaving the property," the press release said.
After locating the suspect, deputies said "he refused to stop and comply with commands" and proceeded to flee from law enforcement.
The pursuit resulted in the man crashing his truck into a ditch, the release says. The man was "actively trying to free his vehicle from the ditch despite multiple law enforcement officers giving commands to stop," LCSO said.
During this interaction, deputies said the man repeatedly said, "Shoot me."
According to LCSO, the man proceeded to wave a firearm at the deputies during the encounter, and "multiple officers fired, striking the suspect."
Once law enforcement secured the man's weapons, they "immediately began rendering lifesaving measures," LCSO said. The man was triaged and treated before being life-flighted to a hospital for treatment. No deputies were injured.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is leading the ongoing investigation with assistance from the LCSO and Panama Police Department. The officers involved in the shooting have been put on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
