Walton Family Foundation awards NWACC's Brightwater program with $1.5M grant

The school plans to use the funding to develop new programs focused on topics including food entrepreneurship, artisanal butchery, and health and wellness.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — The NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) received a $1.5 million grant from the Walton Family Foundation to support its Brightwater program.

Brightwater: A Center for the Study of Food offers industry-leading academy training and helps students develop culinary talent.

The school plans to use the additional funding to develop new programs focused on topics including food entrepreneurship, artisanal butchery, and health and wellness.

They also plan to expand community-based programs such as Brightwater's CORE classes and BWorkforce. CORE classes offer people a chance to learn core kitchen practices and skills like baking bread, making sausage, and pickling.

Through the BWorkforce program, individuals can receive free job training to work in a professional kitchen. The five-week Restaurant Readiness Culinary Bootcamp mixes education and training to prepare individuals for an entry-level job.

“Brightwater offers vital workforce training opportunities to a rapidly growing region,” Robert Burns, the Walton Family Foundation Home Region Program director, said in NWACC's press release. “The creative programming and state-of-the-art facilities provide unique upskilling and career pathways in the culinary sector.”
