SEQUOYAH COUNTY, Okla. — An off-duty Sequoyah County deputy saved a life after pulling someone from a burning vehicle on July 31.

A Facebook post from the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said dispatch received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 64, just outside of Muldrow city limits.

SCSO Deputy Daniel Whitus was off duty but in his patrol unit driving to court, according to the post. Whitus located the vehicle as it began to catch fire.

Whitus sprang into action, noting that the driver was "in and out of consciousness and very incoherent," and safely removed them as the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

"Deputy Whitus’s heroic actions and disregard for his own safety, most definitely saved this man’s life," SCSO said.

The sheriff's office said the driver is now in the hospital. They are in serious but stable condition.
