Oklahoma man sentenced to prison after high-speed chase almost hit festival crowds

On May 6, a Sallisaw police captain and officer drove straight into an SUV that was headed towards a festival, crashing both cars in the process, but saving lives.

SALLISAW, Okla. — On Saturday, May 6, 2023, Sallisaw Police Department (SPD) Captain Weber and Officer Wesley McGuirt were on duty at the Diamond Daze Festival, when reports came in about a police pursuit coming towards them. Acting quickly, Weber and McGuirt took action by driving straight into the vehicle, crashing both SUVs in the process.

The one being chased, Carlton Rucker, was sentenced to a total of 6 years in prison for eluding arrest and assaulting an officer of the peace, according to court documents.

“It's what we all swear an oath to do, to serve and protect. And, you know, we felt the hands of God with us that day, to give us the courage and also to go home safely,” said Captain Weber.

“I just knew that the action that we took had to be swift. And we had to make that decision immediately. And based on the totality of the circumstances of the information that we received, I knew that was the only thing that we could do to make them stop,” said Captain Weber.

“I've applied here to work for Sallisaw for that reason. I live in this area. And I want to be able to help our community,” said Officer Wesley McGuirt.

Captain Weber ended up with a broken wrist while Officer McGuirt got cuts and bruises. No information was released on whether Rucker was injured or not.
