LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — If you are driving around downtown Little Rock you might notice something different. Lights are on at the old VA hospital as there new apartments being built there.
It's a story we've been following for more than a year. Now, the contractor said that the project is almost complete.
"We would change our mind all the time, because when you have a project like this it's almost like a blank sheet of paper," said Pace Burt, contractor of the apartments.
The new apartments will be called The Flats at SOMA. Burt is in charge of the project, and it wasn't an easy task to begin.
"The project's been going on for quite some time. There was a lot of environmental issues ... cleaning up the building, getting the building prepped to do the renovations," said Burt.
It's a $35 million dollar project and as it stands, floors 6 through 11 have been completed with walls and accents finished.
The apartments feature hand-painted islands that adorn each unit with a green tile backsplash. Each unit also comes with more than a dozen windows.
"They are very modern. They have a little of that industrial feel keeping the concrete floors of the original," said Burt.
Floor plans range from 1 bedroom to 3 bedrooms and pricing is between $1,000 to $1,600.
As for amenities, well it includes a pool, sauna, swim spa, and "gear garage," which will have outdoor items to rent for activities, like biking, camping, and hiking.
There's also expected to be a karaoke room and pickleball courts.
"We want to be health oriented, because that's the direction that all the multi-family projects are going in," said Burt.
Burt expects construction to be completed between the next 60 to 90 days.
