On Wednesday one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the nation will take on the streets of Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas.
With a hundred thousand bikes rolling into town, safety becomes a topic of concern for many.
“Motorcycle safety is definitely important,” said Shawn O’Donnell with Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys. “I wear a helmet every time I ride. I hope everybody does, but the fact is, a lot of people don`t.”
Arkansas is a choice state, meaning helmets are optional for anyone 21 and older, but some bikers still opt to wear one.
“The best for safety: chaps, leather vest or coat, helmet. If you are not wearing your helmet, make sure you have proper eyewear,” said O’Donnell.
While wearing safety gear is an option, drinking and driving is not.
“We have got all of the safest rides in the town here,” said Burns. “Northwest Arkansas Taxi is a huge help for us. If you feel like you might not be able to get on your bike, we will have banners here posted with their phone number, they are happy to get you safely here.”
Accidents are inevitable but often can be prevented.
Assistant Event Director, Coleson Burns, enjoys riding his motorcycle, so he understands the dangers of the road.
He advises fellow bikers to obey the speed limit, keeping a comfortable distance from other traffic.
Burns suggests motorists check blind spots several times because motorcycles are difficult to see.
“Most importantly, keep a comfortable cushion around your motorcycle,” said Burns. “There`s going to be thousands of bikes in Fayetteville so there`s no reason to run right up on any motorcycle or four wheel vehicle for that matter.'
“People in cars should look around every time,” O’Donnell said. “Look twice, save a life.
Several motorcycle safety events will be held at the Harley village at the Baum Stadium venue in Fayetteville.
Experts will be out doing demos and inspections as well as teaching riding etiquette and giving pointers on bikes.
