(UPDATE: Both suspects are now in police custody.)
FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- A pair of men stole two metal canisters containing an estimated $20,000 at a Bank OZK (formerly known as Banks of the Ozarks) in Fort Smith, Sgt. Wendall Sampson with Fort Smith Police confirmed.
Two female employees at the bank were servicing an ATM about 11 a.m. Thursday (July 26), when a black male approached them. The man then stole two metal canisters and ran to a white Dodge Durango. The suspect fled the area with another black male driving, according to Sgt. Sampson.
An employee at Randall Ford, across from the bank, told police he heard the employees screaming. The employee then followed the suspect's SUV into Oklahoma while on the phone with police, informing officers the suspects were heading into Spiro, Oklahoma.
After being pursued by Oklahoma law enforcement, the men crashed the Durango on U.S. 271 in Spiro.
One suspect, Daniel Giles, was captured after the crash, according to Sgt. Sampson.
Giles last known address is in Oklahoma City, however, he is also out on parole out of Texas and has gang affiliation, according to LeFlore Co. Undersheriff, Kendall Morgan.
The two damaged, empty cash canisters were located in a drainage underpass in Fort Smith.
A Fort Smith resident confronted the suspects for littering, then went to check on what they had discarded and found the two empty canisters, said Sgt. Sampson.
Sometime after 9 p.m. Thursday (July 26), the second suspect, Romaris Smith, was captured outside a Casey's General Store in Spiro.
Smith went into the store to borrow a phone, LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale told 5NEWS.
The employee who loaned a phone to Smith followed him outside and overheard him saying to another person that he would be waiting for them behind the store. Another employee at Casey's called police while Smith was outside on the phone.
When deputies arrived, Smith was found hiding near the gas station with a large amount of money on him.
Police were unsure if all the money that was stolen has been recovered, but they said a large portion of it has been found.
