BENTON COUNTY (KFSM) -- A Bella Vista mother, charged with capital murder for killing her 6-year-old son, appeared before a Benton County judge on Wednesday (March 8).
Cathy Torres pleaded guilty to capital murder and battery. She signed a plea deal for life in prison without parole for the capital murder charge and 20 years for battery.
A jury sentenced her husband, Mauricio Torres, to death on the same charges in November of 2016.
Prosecutors in the case were seeking the death penalty. Benton County prosecutor Nathan Smith said he is pleased to bring this case to close. He said he hopes the community will remember Isaiah's brothers and sisters during this time.
"I know the victim's surviving siblings, Isaiah's brothers and sisters are all relieved to have it behind them. I think it's important for Cathy Torres to have admitted her role in it and to receive the punishment of the rest of her natural life in prison," Smith said.
Torres' attorney Tony Pirany said their thoughts and prayers are with everyone who loved Isaiah.
"Cathy Torres deeply regrets what happened to her son Isaiah including her own actions and decisions and while the facts of their lives may not ever be fully known we are very relieved this devastatingly difficult case is over," Pirany said.
An autopsy ruled Isaiah’s death was a homicide caused by injuries related to rape and chronic child abuse, according to the probable cause affidavits for Mauricio and Cathy Torres.
