Centerton officials this week will install a $62,000 tornado alert system, after a grant covered $50,000 of the cost.
Mayor Bill Edwards said the siren system will be the first in place for the growing city. The three 45-foot-tall sirens have 16 speakers that sound the alarm in all directions.
One siren will be on the north side of town, with another near the fire station. The third siren will be near the White Oak Station on Highway 72, Edwards said.
Edwards stressed that these sirens will be for alerting people outside, meaning residents will likely not hear the sound from inside their homes.
For severe weather alerts inside, the mayor urges people to join the Benton County Alert System. The system will call locals if there is a tornado approaching or send a text message to those subscribing to the system.

The mayor said the sirens should be up and running in the next two weeks.
