EUREKA SPRINGS (KFSM) — The Eureka Springs firefighter who was injured while battling a fire last month has been release from the burn unit and is heading back to Arkansas, said Fire Chief Randy Ates on Thursday (Sept. 17).

Rod Wasson will be heading to Fort Smith to stay with his parents while he is recuperating, Ates said. He will attend outpatient therapy to regain his lung function and strength.

Ates said that Wasson’s returning home is a marvelous leap in his recovery. Previously they were anticipating that Wasson would have to stay in a hospital room for another week and then be sent to a rehab hospital.

Ates also passed along a message from Wasson, who wanted to say “thank you” to everyone for their prayers and support.

The investigation into Wasson’s injury will be concluded and release shortly.
