Two counts of capital murder were filed Monday (July 1) against Gregory Kinsey in last week's fatal machete attack. Kinsey is accused of using a machete to kill Brandon Prince and Nathan Young in an alley on North D Street in Fort Smith. Young's family is still trying to cope with his death.
"It’s 60 seconds at a time, said Young's fiancee Kristen Gray. "It's 60 seconds at a time. That’s it. That's all I can commit to at this point."
Gray said Young was remarkable.
"He was a rock, an absolute rock, the reason I got up in the morning, the reason that I did everything," she said. "He loved his children."
Gray said it was Young's loyalty that made him who he was.
"Fiercely loyal, unbelievably loyal for anybody in his life," said Gray.
Gray was nearly 12 hours away on vacation with their three-year-old daughter Katie at the time of Young's death.
Gray said she went into a state of shock when she received the call that changed her life.
"I dropped my phone,” said Gray. “I handed it to my mom; good thing she was there. My children are all with my mom because I can hardly take care of myself right now."
Family and friends said Prince and Young were acting in self-defense when the machete attack occurred.
"Justice will prevail. I believe that," Gray said. "I have to believe that."
Nathan Maynard was with Prince and Young at the time of their deaths. He said he fought for his friends' lives.
"My friends are dead,” said Maynard. “I could have been right there with them; I should have.”
Gray said plans are underway for her fiancé to be cremated.
She said a ceremony will be held for him in October, when they had planned to marry.
Kinsey is set to appear in court Wednesday July 3 for his arraignment. Kinsey's mother said she believes he acted in self-defense.
