FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- Police arrested a man in connection to a bank robbery that happened Tuesday (Sept. 8) in Fayetteville.
Clarence Williams, 62, of Fort Smith is facing an aggravated robbery charge, according to jail records.
Police said Williams robbed the Northwest Arkansas Federal Credit Union on N. Woolsey Ave. around 2:15 p.m. Tuesday and left on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Investigators brought in K9s to search the surrounding area and locked down a nearby VA as a precautionary measure.
Eyewitnesses told police they recognized the man because of the bandages on his face and said he made a transaction at the bank last week, according to investigators. The bandages were covering up burns, they said.
Authorities located Williams hours later driving in the Fort Smith area, according to his arrest report. Officers with Fort Smith police, Arkansas State Police and the FBI attempted to stop Williams, but he fled and later crashed his vehicle, the report states.
Police located a black, canvas duffle bag with a large amount of cash inside in the vehicle and found several thousand dollars in cash on Williams, according to the arrest report. In interviews with investigators, Williams admitted to committing the robbery in Fayetteville, the report states.
Williams has a court hearing scheduled for Friday (Sept. 11) at 7:45 a.m. and his bond has not yet been set, jail records show.
