FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) — A man died Monday morning (May 9) from injuries he sustained during an officer-involved shooting last month.

Willie Tillman, 33, of Marianna, died around 5 a.m. in a local hospital from injuries he sustained during a shooting on April 23, according to a police department press release.

Fayetteville Police stopped Tillman for driving without headlights around 2:25 a.m. on April 23, according to Sgt. Craig Stout.

Tillman stepped out of the vehicle, but dove back inside the car and attempted to flee from police, according to a release.

A struggle then began between the officers and Tillman, who was able to drive the vehicle while the officers were partially inside.

Stout said both officers attempted to deploy their tasers but were unsuccessful.

One of the officers was able to get out of the vehicle, but another was still inside while Tillman continued driving.

That officer fired off multiple shots and struck Tillman in the chest, abdomen, and leg. The car eventually able to get the vehicle to stop on Sunbridge Drive.

The shooting prompted an internal investigation with the Fayetteville Police Department. Those results are expected to be released later this week, according to the release.

Fayetteville police said in the release, “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Mr. Tillman during their time of loss.”
