FORT SMITH (KFSM) – Students went back to the classroom on Monday (Aug. 15) in the River Valley. For one local school it’s the beginning of a new era.
Students at Southside High School began a new tradition as the Southside Mavericks.
For the past five decades, the school mascot was Johnny Rebel. However, during the last school year the tradition was retired because it’s connection to the rebel flag and suggested racism issues.
Over the summer, crews worked on the football field and basketball court to switch all the logos to the Mavericks. Athletes even practiced for their upcoming season in their new uniforms.
Even though the school logo is no longer the rebel, students will still strive for excellence as the Southside Mavericks.
