The family of a 5-year-old Fort Smith boy who was seriously injured during a vehicle accident with a suspected intoxicated driver says the child is getting better.

Ky’Ree Nelson is still in intensive care, but his aunt Shatoya Freeman says he is talking and crying like normal. He’s expected to remain hospitalized at Arkansas Children’s in Little Rock for a while.

A fund has been set up at First National Bank in Fort Smith to help with the boy’s medical bills. Donations can be made to “Ky’Ree Nelson Medical Fund,” according to a family member.

The accident happened just before 7 a.m. on April 20. Sgt. Daniel Grubbs with Fort Smith Police says it appears 19-year-old Megen Baker was driving a Chevrolet Blazer west on Geren Road when she crossed the center line and hit a Hyundai driven by Tazha Freeman, 25.

“The impact caused the vehicle to spin, hit a curb, and end up side swiping a utility pole,” says Sgt. Grubbs.

“It’s a good thing they’re both alive,” says Williams, “That’s all that really matters. It’s going to be kind of hard, but that’s the good thing, they’re both alive.”

Baker was charged with suspicion of Driving While intoxicated on drugs, police say. She  was also charged for driving on a suspended license and driving left of center.
