FORT SMITH (KFSM) — A Fort Smith family donated 16.3 acres of riverfront land to be the site of a future U.S. Marshals Museum, according to a U.S. Marshals Museum press release.
The land was donated by the Robbie Westphal family and is approximately 10 acres more than the original tract of land that was donated several years ago.
“We are thrilled the Westphal gift to the museum is now complete,” said Jim Dunn, president and CEO of the U.S. Marshals Museum. “We couldn’t have picked a more fitting spot for the future U.S. Marshals Museum—right across from where deputy marshals crossed the Arkansas River into old Indian Territory to enforce the law and protect our nation.”
The property is subject to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers navigation easement for channel alignment. The U.S. Marshal Museum’s engineers and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are working on a plan for construction of the museum, which could take four to six months for approval.
