A Fort Smith fire marshal retired Tuesday after 40 years of service to the city.
Friends and co-workers gathered at Fire Station #1 shortly before to wish Fire Marshal Chris Driggers well as he heads on to retirement.
Chief Driggers began his career with the Fort Smith Fire Department in 1973, working his way up through the ranks from probationary fireman, to driver, to captain then on to battalion chief and fire marshal.
He says now he will be doing whatever his wife tells him to do.
“Well, I used to tell her I didn’t have the time to do anything, now I can't use that excuse,” he said.
Chief Driggers, who lives in Fort Smith and went to school there, says he'd like to thank the people of Fort Smith for allowing him to work for them.
