SALLISAW (KFSM) – On day three of a trial for a woman accused of leaving a teen boy in a ditch after an ATV wreck, the jury heard from both the suspect and the victim at the Sequoyah County Courthouse.
Angela Gray was arrested in August 2014 and is facing several charges, including felony leaving the scene of an accident, according to the Sequoyah County Court Clerk. Investigators said Christian Mayberry was thrown from the ATV and severely injured in 2013.
Gray told the jurors she did leave the scene of the accident, and Mayberry was “completely unconscious.”
She said her first phone call after the wreck was to her son, but she wasn’t sure if he could hear her.
When she left Mayberry, Gray said she tried to get help from her friend’s father-in-law, who lives nearby. She said her son, who later arrived at the scene, called 911.
Mayberry, who is now 18, testified Wednesday morning (Aug. 19). He said Gray was driving the ATV and he was thrown from the vehicle after they turned a corner.
However, Gray testified Mayberry was the one driving, adding that neither one of them was wearing a seat belt.
Gray testified she consumed seven beers between 4:00 p.m. and midnight that day.
The defense asked Gray how she felt about Mayberry’s injuries and she said, “I can’t even describe it – awful – not even a strong enough word.”
A friend of Gray’s, and an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper also testified Wednesday.
The prosecution and defense will have closing arguments Thursday and the case will go to the jury, who will decide whether Gray is guilty of leaving the scene of an injury accident.
If she is convicted, Gray could face up to two years in prison and up to one year in the county jail.
