FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - A Keep Fayetteville Fair sign was vandalized with spray paint overnight on either Dec. 1 or Dec. 2, police say.
The sign was put up in a Fayetteville resident's yard in the 200 block of South School Avenue, according to police.
"Keep Fayetteville Fair believes the vandalism is another reason, among many, for Fayetteville citizens to vote against the repeal," a post on the Keep Fayetteville Fair Facebook wall states.
The owner of the home where the sign was posted called police at 9 a.m. on Dec. 2 saying, the sign was spray painted overnight, according to police.
Since the monetary damage was under $1,000, the suspect faces a charge of first-degree criminal mischief, according to police. Of course, the incident report states there is zero monetary value for the sign because it was given to the homeowner for free.
No officers were sent to the location of the vandalism, and it isn't under investigation due to the lack of a suspect or any evidence other than the sign itself, police said.
In response to the vandalism, Keep Fayetteville Fair called for opponents of ordinance 119 to "refrain from hate tactics."
Wendy Campbell, spokesperson for Repeal 119, released the following statement:
"Repeal 119 does not condone nor promote this kind of hate. We believe in the democratic process of free speech. We are saddened by the assumption that 'our side' did this. Clearly this is an individual act. We need to be respectful of all people even if they believe differently than we do."
