OKLAHOMA CITY (KFSM) — Viewers could find themselves subject to a new lottery scam that is circulating throughout the nation, warns a Wednesday morning (Aug. 19) Oklahoma Lottery press release.
The scammers send Facebook or text messages to recipients saying they have won a large prize, according to the release. They claim to be with the D.C. Powerball Lottery Grant, and tell recipients that they have 48 hours to claim the prize at the D.C. Lottery offices, only after transferring $950 to the scammers.
This information is false and is not associated with any officially recognized lottery, the release states. The identity of lottery winners is unknown until they step forward to claim their winnings.
Anyone who is subject to a potential scam is urged to contact their state’s attorney general’s office.
