A Lowell attorney was released from jail on bond after deputies say he forged documents to help a client gain custody of a child.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrested Steven Ralph Jackson, 41, Friday in connection with forgery and interference with custody of a child. He was released Saturday on $2,500 bond.

Deputies said Jackson forged custody documents to appear to be from the Washington County Circuit Clerk’s Office, then gave them to his client to try to gain custody of the client’s child. The client gave the documents in June to the child’s mother, then took the child, according to a Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Jackson’s client had given him $2,000 to help with an ongoing custody dispute between the client and an ex-wife.

Jackson admitted to detectives during an interview that he forged the documents, according to the report.

The child was returned to the mother.
