SEQUOYAH COUNTY, OKLA. (KFSM) – A Muldrow man accused of murdering a Sallisaw man in 1997 was extradited Tuesday from Texas to the Sequoyah County, Okla., Detention Center, according to the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office.
Ricky Dority, 56, was extradited from the Bureau of Federal Prisons facility in Texarkana to face charges in the death of Mitchell Nixon, 28. Dority was arraigned Tuesday night and is being held in the Sequoyah County Detention Center, said Sheriff Ron Lockhart.
He has spent the last 15 years in federal prison following a conviction on a weapons charge, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Dority was charged with murder Aug. 12 in Nixon’s death. Nixon was killed in October 1997, and his body was found on Tower Estates Road east of Sallisaw, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The state medical examiner determined he was beaten to death. His truck was found abandoned at a nearby Walmart later that day. The case was investigated by the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations.
Another man, Rex Robbins, 38, was arrested in March, 2013, in connection with the murder case after the case was re-opened by Sheriff’s Office investigators. He was also accused of beating Nixon to death.
Dority’s release date on his current conviction is set for March 22, 2016, unless he is convicted of the new charges and a judge extends his prison time, authorities said.
A warrant is outstanding for the new charges, and further court appearances are pending, according to authorities.
A third suspect in the case, Bobby Scott, is dead, authorities said.
