FORT SMITH (KFSM) — The Southside Mascot Committee will meet Monday (Nov. 2) to make a final decision on the school’s new mascot logo. This comes after the school board voted in favor of changing the Southside High School mascot from the Rebels to the Mavericks.

Southside Rebel fans will soon be cheering on the Southside Mavericks. But before they start putting the new logo on uniforms and all throughout the school, the mascot committee is coming together one more time to determine the look of the new mascot’s logo.

For the past two weeks, students and members of the Fort Smith community have been submitting logo ideas for the Mavericks at the main office of the high school.

Southside has always been the Rebels since the school opened in 1963. Back in October, the school board voted in favor to change the mascot to the Mavericks. The Mavericks won over other mascot options, including the Patriots.

The change comes after the Fort Smith School Board recommended banning the “Dixie” fight song and the Rebel mascot “Johnny Reb” at Southside High School games. After the meeting in October, Southside’s Principal Wayne Haver wanted to give a two week period for students to submit suggestions for the new Maverick mascot logo.

The committee will meet tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria.
