A woman died Thursday in Fort Smith following a fiery head-on collision, authorities said.

Eyewitnesses told police a woman driving a white Nissan Altima southbound on Highway 253 drifted over the center line and hit a black Chevrolet pickup truck head-on in the northbound lane. Sandra Pulse, 64, was later pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

The woman was trapped in her car before it briefly caught fire. She was taken to the hospital. The man driving the truck did not suffer any injuries, said Sgt. John Classen.

The call came at 7:30 a.m. Thursday (March 6), according to dispatchers with the Fort Smith Police Department.

Pulse, of Pocola, Okla., was later identified as the woman taken to the hospital.

"It`s just something you can never imagine," said Pulse's son, David Apel.

"She was just a loving mom," said Pulse's daughter, Tracy Hogan.

Pulse’s body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine if a serious medical issue could have been a contributing factor in the collision.
