Squad cars are set up near the new Lincoln High School after police say there were seven near-accidents this morning on the school’s first day of classes.
The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department has not yet set up new speed limit or school zone signs along the highway that stands 300 feet from the newly-built school. The speed limit is 55 miles per hour along the stretch of road near the high school.
Superintendent Clay Hendrix said the school district has sent several letters to the highway department asking for new signage or a flashing yellow light to alert motorists of the road’s proximity to the school.
Police said they will stay near the school during school hours, for the time being, to discourage high speeds along the road and to alert vehicles of the upcoming school.
