FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- The Mount Sequoyah Retreat and Conference Center in Fayetteville will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday (June 12) for the resurfacing of two tennis courts. The free ceremony is set to take place at 5:30 p.m.
Fayetteville Mayor Lioneld Jordan is scheduled to preside over the dedication.
The resurfacing is financed by a $10,000 grant from the United States Tennis Association and a $7, 223 grant from the Arkansas Tennis Patrons Foundation. Those donations were matched by the United Methodist Foundation of Arkansas.
Concerned there was not a safe and nice place to play tennis in Fayetteville that was not a country club, the conference center saw a need to use grant money to resurface the courts. The grant money also helped pave a new sidewalk and made the courts wheelchair accessible.
"Fayetteville tennis in particular has said that they are busting at the seams," said Program Director Emily Gentry. "They've got kids, and they just need a place to put them out there, experiencing the game of tennis, not only kids but adults, too."
The courts are free to play on if lessons are not taking place.
