(KFSM) – The original Sony Playstation turned 20 on Wednesday (Dec. 3), according to a news release.
Introduced on Dec. 3, 1994, in Japan, the Playstation came to America in September of 1995. The gaming console became the first computer entertainment platform to sell 100 million units, doing so in nine years and six months, according to Sony documents.
To celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the Playstation, Sony announced it was releasing a “retro” gray Playstation 4.
The first Playstation went head to head with the Nintendo 64 when it was released, putting out popular games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and multiple Final Fantasy titles.
Discontinued in 2006, the original Playstation was succeeded by the Playstation 2, which was released on March 4, 2000.
