FORT SMITH, Ark. (KFSM) — Volunteers are cleaning up Union Christian Academy in Fort Smith after heavy rain caused the school to flood overnight.
School has been canceled for Monday, August 26 and Tuesday, August 27, according to School Board President Daniel Mackey. Mackey told 5NEWS local churches will help host classes on Wednesday, August 28.
On Wednesday, August 28 the PreK-4th grades will meet at Central Christian Church and the 5th-12th grades will meet at Grand Avenue Baptist Church until at least October 1.
Parents and students moved desks, filing cabinets, and other items out of classrooms Saturday (Aug. 24) morning. Volunteers have been at the school helping out since 8 a.m.
Mackey said about 80 percent of the school has been flooded.
He was first alerted about the flooding early Saturday (Aug. 24) morning when the volleyball team showed up to leave for a trip to Tulsa.
The school has since released a statement saying in part, "The school will not be operational for at least a month due to flooding and contamination from flood waters across the campus... Despite the damages and challenges, the school does plan to remain on schedule."
Union Christian Academy Head of School Ricky Massengale says the school has "been working intently to ensure our school year will continue with excellence and that we can continue to provide a quality, Christian education that honors the Lord."
