Supplies of O-negative blood at critical levels following deadly Benton County storms

"O-negative is crucial in emergencies when there is no time to type and match a patient," and CBCO said they only have about a day's supply left.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks (CBCO) is in urgent need of O-negative blood after tornados and storms swept through Benton County on May 26, killing four, injuring others, destroying homes, and knocking out power.

O-negative, the only blood type that is almost universally acceptable, "is crucial in emergencies when there is no time to type and match a patient," and CBCO said they only have about a day's supply left.

“Reserves are at critically low levels. As the sole provider of blood to area hospitals, this shortage has a significant local impact,” said CBCO Media Relations Representative, Michelle Teter. "If you are eligible, we urge you to donate. If you have never donated before, now is the perfect time to start. A simple act of kindness today can help save lives in a tragedy tomorrow.”

CBCO states that all donors will receive two free tickets to an upcoming Arkansas Naturals home game, as well as a free T-shirt.

Donors are encouraged to schedule appointments at the CBCO website here.
