MISSOURI, USA — Fourteen responders from Missouri and Arkansas have been dispatched to Texas to support recovery efforts after Hurricane Beryl killed at least seven people and damaged countless buildings, according to a press release by the American Red Cross.
These efforts come as Benton County, Arkansas is still cleaning up from tornadoes that swept through the area on May 26, destroying homes and killing four.
Red Cross volunteer and Fayetteville native Linda Morgan spent her week traveling through Texas, from San Antonio to McAllen, then to Port Lavaca, and eventually to Houston.
Morgan has been volunteering for the past 21 years and has visited 20 states while supporting others. She oftentimes works twelve-hour shifts helping those who were displaced by the storms, handing out food and water in shelters.
"It's very rewarding to go out and help people that may be down on their luck," said Morgan.
In addition to the fourteen, three other Missouri responders are in Iowa after floods caused considerable damage there.
Julie Bowen, executive director for the NWA chapter of the American Red Cross, said her team takes a proactive approach to support.
"Our teams have been there to help immediately after Hurricane Beryl made landfall," Brown said. "We are grateful to the volunteers who are willing to leave home and help those affected by disasters."
90% of the American Red Cross's workforce is made up of volunteers, for more information on how to give back in times of crisis, visit the American Red Cross's website here.
