Arkansas pharmacists advise tackling seasonal allergies now

Pharmacists say the pollen count is high right now, and if you deal with seasonal allergies, it's time to have a treatment.

ARKANSAS, USA — The trees are in bloom and the weather is feeling like springtime, which means allergy season is here. As many Arkansans are already feeling the effects of the pollen, pharmacists offer advice on how to tackle those symptoms.

According to pharmacists, the pollen count is very high in our area right now, and if you deal with seasonal allergies, it's time to have a treatment plan.

Itchy eyes and nose, sneezing and coughing are all symptoms of seasonal allergies. Pharmacists say there are plenty of options to knock them out. The symptoms you're experiencing can help point you toward the right type of medicine to take.

For those with a runny nose, CVS Health pharmacist Nicole Henry recommends an anti-histamine.

“It’s going to stop the nose from running, stop eyes from running and then relieve some of those symptoms," said Henry.

For those with a stuffy nose, Henry recommends a decongestant or nasal sprays.

"That's going to help to open the airways," said Henry. "That can relieve some runny nose symptoms too.”

Henry also said nasal rinses and saline sprays are a good at-home remedy to get the pollen out of your nose and can help you breathe better.

Some people also turn to prescription allergy medicines. Pharmacists say if an over-the-counter allergy medicine isn't working for you, you can schedule an appointment with your local pharmacist to talk about other treatment options.
