FORT SMITH, Ark. — According to the Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD), a bicyclist has died after being hit by a vehicle on the morning of Friday, Sept. 20, 2024.
The report said the crash occurred at around 7:30 a.m. near Roberts Boulevard on the 549 overpass. The victim was identified as 68-year-old Stephen E. Hobbs, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Mr. Hobbs was a long-time local resident and avid cyclist known to many in the community for his dedication to staying active and enjoying the outdoors. His next of kin has been notified, and chaplains have been dispatched to provide support," FSPD said.
Police said the driver of the vehicle involved stayed on the scene and "is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation." FSPD's Accident Reconstruction Unit is still investigating, and no charges have been filed yet.
