POTEAU, Okla. — A 13-year-old teenager from Poteau is facing a felony charge for making school threats, according to the Poteau Police Department (PPD).

According to officials, on Sunday, Sept. 22, a teenager went to the police department to report a school shooting threat on social media. Although the threat did not include a name, date, time, or school, officials began investigating the case.

On Sept. 23, law enforcement presence was increased at schools in Poteau as a precautionary measure, the police department said.

As the investigation developed, police said they were able to identify and interview "involved persons" as they worked to track down the threat.

PPD said Homeland Security technical resources helped them track down the suspect, a 13-year-old male teenager from Poteau.

Officials went to the teenager's home and arrested him. He was taken to the police department for an interview and later charged with a felony charge of terrorism hoax.

Police said the suspect is currently in a juvenile detention facility.
