Prepping your home, plants, and pets for a chilly weekend

With chilly temperatures on the horizon in 5COUNTRY, there are some important things to remember.

ARKANSAS, USA — With temperatures in the low 20s this weekend, Bill Parish at Pro Tire in Springdale recommends checking your car before going anywhere.

"Make sure your windshield washer fluid is filled up with something that's good to below 32 degrees. Check the battery. Check the air pressure in the tires. Make sure the tread is good. Test the antifreeze to make sure it's good to below 32," said Parish.

He said to make sure to fill up your tires. He recommends a little more than normal because tires are prone to dropping once it gets cold.

"When they drop they'll still be around 34 or 35," said Parish.

Don Kinder from Kinder Heating and Air recommends checking your heat and upping it first. But avoid over-exhausting the system, and avoid using appliances to heat your home like your oven or a kerosene heater.

"Turn it on and make sure that it's working, then turn it back to where you're more comfortable to have it," said Kinder.

And as for your plants, most aren't fans of the cold.

"All of your house plants need to come inside this weekend," said Sarah Wynne at Westwood Gardens in Fayetteville. "Bringing them under a porch or something would be fine. However, I think there are some low 20s that are projected. And you may want to get those into our garage or something where there's a little bit of heat."

And with frost in the forecast, make sure to water your plants thoroughly before.

"The water does insulate the roots and keeps the roots from freezing," said Wynne.

If you have pets, it's best to bring them inside once the temperatures drop. If your pets are used to living outside make sure they have plenty of food and water as well as an outdoor shelter.
