PEA RIDGE, Ark. — Pea Ridge National Military Park announced prescribed burns that will take place between Nov. 20 and Dec. 31.
Areas near the fire operations will be closed, including roads or trails.
Park Superintendent Shelley Todd said up to 1,284 acres will be burned to "maintain and restore the historic landscape of the battlefield area." Todd also explains that this is a normal process.
"Prescribed fire is a way for land managers to utilize fire as a tool in a carefully planned manner while following very specific weather and personnel guidelines to protect public safety and achieve our resource management objectives.”
Although fire officials try to avoid heavy smoke in nearby areas, those who are sensitive to smoke are asked to avoid outdoor activities during the prescribed burn.
The prescribed burns will be weather-permitting, but residents can call the park to ask about the burns at (479) 451-8122.
