FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The stands in Bud Walton arena were packed for the Razorback women's basketball game on Friday, Nov 10. But, the average age among the thousands of fans was a little younger than usual.
Elementary school students showcased their excitement to attend a college-level sporting event on Friday with screams across the stadium. And it's no surprise who kids like Raylee are rooting for.
"Arkansas, obviously!" Raylee said.
The University of Arkansas invites elementary schools across Northwest Arkansas to see a game every year.
Centerton Gramble Elementary teacher Samantha Hellman said, "It is an awesome opportunity for us to get out of the classroom. It's actually our first field trip of the school year. We are just excited to be supporting our community."
Despite being outside the classroom, the kids are feeling a little inspired by what it might feel like to go to a university like this one.
"It's an exciting opportunity for the kids to get to see basketball players, cheerleaders, dancers, just see where they can go to college. This gives them the opportunity to see different things that they might not get to see with their families."
Raylee said she specifically likes seeing the players score, for instance.
"I really like the part when people get a three-shoot," she said.
Parent chaperone Taryn Cornelius said she's happy for her sons to participate, who recently transferred from another school. "I have not seen anything like this and I think it's super unique and cool," Cornelius said.
With the elementary schooler's help, the women's team had 11,026 spectators today, making it the fourth largest attendance in school history.
