Fayetteville issues water conservation order due to 'extreme heat'

Due to these conditions, the city's water system has reduced water pressure for some customers, the release said.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The City of Fayetteville has issued a water conservation order to residential and commercial customers in east Fayetteville, Goshen, and customers along the Highway 16 east corridor between Fayetteville and Elkins.

"Due to dry conditions and extreme heat, the City’s water system is experiencing increased demand, resulting in reduced or no water pressure for some customers," according to a press release.

The impacted areas are:

  • East of Highway 265 and generally following the Highway 45 corridor (see map here)
  • East of S. Dead Horse Mountain Rd. and south of East Wyman Rd. (see map here)

Until Sept. 15, the city will allow residents to use larger amounts of water only on certain days from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Those with even-numbered addresses can irrigate on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Odd-numbered addresses will be allowed to irrigate at the same time on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.

"With hot summer temperatures and heavy demand for irrigation, usage in east Fayetteville and Goshen is high, and parts of the water system are being pushed to its limit," the city said.

Fayetteville Utilities Director Tim Nyander said it's the little things that can make a big difference in water conservation.

"Just be keeping an eye on on the water that you're using and turn it off when it's not needed," Nyander said. "The simple facts you know, like turn it off when you're brushing your teeth, and just the little things of conserving water will actually go a long way — the big picture of the city."

However, this may be one of the last years this area will have a conservation request as they are planning to build a new pump by fall 2025.

"We do have a project to build the pump station that was needed out on the east side of town," Nyander said. "Once that's constructed, we won't need these conservation notices."

Residents outside of the affected areas can opt to help by also conserving water.
