CRAWFORD COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — A federal judge ruled that the Crawford County Library System (CCLS) must return books on "social issues" to general circulation.
The lawsuit concerns LGBTQ+ books made for children being moved to the adult section of the library, called the "social section." Three mothers filed the lawsuit on behalf of their children, stating that the library system is violating their First Amendment right to receive information.
The judge responded by saying that their First Amendment has not been violated "because the books in question have not been removed from the library, but rather have simply been relocated to a different area which is still accessible to all patrons."
On Sept. 30, the judge ordered the library system to "immediately dissolve the 'social' or 'social issues' section." The CCLS must now move the books to "appropriate sections," regardless of their opinions.
Additionally, the judge said the library system is prohibited from "coercing CCLS staff into acting inconsistently with this injunction."
