City of Rogers still cleaning up nearly a month after tornadoes

The city of Rogers is still in the process of cleaning up after tornadoes on May 26. Residents believe they still have a long way to go.

ROGERS, Ark — On Sunday it will have been four weeks since multiple tornadoes hit Northwest Arkansas, killing multiple people and causing damage to hundreds of homes and businesses.

Despite the time passed, the cleanup effort in Rogers is still going. On June 21, the City of Rogers gave an update on what's left and what's next.

"The big thing right now for us is the debris pickup that's, you know, locally within Rogers. That's kind of one thing that we're really focused on. It's been going very well. I'm very impressed with how much progress has been made by the storm debris pickup crews," said Peter Masonis, a spokesperson for the city.

Masonis tells 5NEWS that around 525,000 cubic yards of debris has been picked up from the streets of Rogers, and that the work isn't done yet.

The city has gotten a lot of help from FEMA, with almost 1,000 approved applications and almost four million dollars in recovery funding.

On top of that, the community is coming together to help each other out.

"It's been a great thing to see, and I believe it's been a, you know, as bad, as bad as this has been for Rogers, I believe it's been good for the community of Rogers to kind of experience this together," Masonis said.

Terry Mudd has lived in Rogers for 47 years and said he's never seen anything like this, as he's still in the cleanup process.

"The process is going to take a long time to get over, and I just appreciate all the help that everybody's given us. We went without electricity for 10 days. We're still without cable, and we don't have internet because there is no cable." Mudd said.

Mudd says his kids have helped him out during the cleanup process.

"At 71 years old, I can't stay at it like they can. They used the chainsaw, carried the limbs around front, and cleaned it all up back here, most of it, I still got some to do." Mudd said.

And through all of it, he's just grateful that he and his family are okay.

"Thank the good Lord that the wife and I were not damaged or hurt or any of our kids. So I just praise the Lord that we're still here." Mudd said.
