JOHNSON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders is calling for a convention to fill a Republican candidate vacancy for the Johnson County justice of peace position for District 10.
According to a release on Aug. 15, the Johnson County Election Commission certified the results of the March 5 primary, including Jeremy Hatchet as the Republican nominee for District 10 JP.
However, Hatchet has withdrawn from the race due to "unavoidable illness," and Sanders says that the nomination vacancy needs to be filled.
"The Republican Party of Arkansas timely notified me of the vacancy in nomination for the Republican Party nominee for the Johnson County office of the Justice of the Peace, District 10, and indicated that the Party chooses to fill the vacancy in nomination by convention," the release said.
Now, a special convention of delegates of the Johnson County Republican Committee will be held no later than Aug. 20 to fill the vacancy for the Republican nominee.
The filing period begins at noon on Aug. 15 and ends at noon on Aug. 19. A certificate of nomination can be expected by Aug. 21.
