Fort Smith shooting victim was pregnant woman, police say

Police identified the suspect as 22-year-old Erick Luna-Chavez.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD) arrested a man in connection to a domestic incident and shooting that left a pregnant woman hospitalized and a school on lockdown on Dec. 17.

Officials said the shooting took place on MacArthur Drive at around 9:55 a.m. At around the same time, Sunnymede Elementary, which is nearby, went on lockdown and officers secured the school's perimeter, according to Fort Smith Public Schools. The district said the lockdown was lifted at 10:24 a.m., and all students were reported safe.

Victim

The pregnant woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, where she was stabilized, according to police. FSPD said she and the baby are both expected to survive. 

Suspect

Police identified the suspect as 22-year-old Erick Luna-Chavez, who was arrested and is currently being held without bond at the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center. He is facing multiple charges, including: 

  • one count of aggravated residential burglary
  • one count of standard residential burglary 
  • one count of tampering with evidence

FSPD said this is still an active investigation and more information would be released when "available and appropriate."
