EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. — Approximately 10,500 gallons of untreated wastewater is flowing into a creek in Eureka Springs per day after a sewage treatment plant malfunction caused a leak.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) released an alert at 2 p.m. on Sept. 24 on their Facebook page, referencing the wastewater discharged into Leatherwood Creek as "untreated effluent."

"This untreated effluent is flowing into Leatherwood Creek, which ultimately reaches the upper end of the White River arm of Table Rock Lake near Holiday Island, approximately six miles downstream of Beaver Dam," the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said.

In situations of a major wastewater leak, municipalities are required to issue a disaster emergency proclamation. While there isn't a boil order in place in Eureka Springs, the USACE strongly advised the "public to refrain from drinking or swimming in Leatherwood Creek downstream of the wastewater plant until this issue is fully resolved."

USACE said they will release updates as conditions change. 5NEWS will update this article with details as they become available.
