Washington County deputies shoot man who pointed a gun at them during disturbance call, sheriff says

Officials say when deputies arrived, they "were met by the man who pointed a handgun at them."

WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — A man in Washington County has been shot by deputies after pointing a gun at them during a disturbance call, according to a release

The Washington County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) says they responded to the call on Sunday, Nov. 12 at around 3:18 a.m. The incident was on Hall Road near Prairie Grove, the release says. Officials identified the man as 46-year-old Ismael Fernandez.

Officials say when deputies arrived, they "were met by the man who pointed a handgun at them." That's when deputies fired at the man, hitting him. The release says deputies immediately rendered first aid until emergency crews arrived to take over.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he is being treated and the deputies were not injured, officials say.

According to the release, two deputies have been placed on administrative leave while they investigate to confirm "agency policies were followed." Sheriff Cantrell with WCSO requested Arkansas State Police (ASP) to investigate the shooting and WCSO says any further information about the incident will be released by ASP.
