Sonora Middle School in Springdale completes wheelchair swing installations

The four schools were selected "due to their special education population," according to the Springdale School District.

SPRINGDALE, Ark. — Sonora Middle School in Springdale has completed the installation of six wheelchair swings on its playground, according to the Springdale School District (SSD).

The swings are from the brand Freedom Glider which the district said is CSA and ASTM compliant. 

What is CSA and ASTM? 

CSA: The nonprofit Canadian Standards Association (CSA) "provides testing and certification services" for a variety of products such as playground equipment, according to Freedom Glider

ASTM: The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) is an organization that develops standards for "materials products, systems and services." Its standards are  "widely recognized and used around the world that ensure the safety, quality and reliability of products," as stated on Freedom Glider.

How do they work? 

The swings have four wheelchair tie-downs to secure it when it rocks. It also has a rope for the students to self-propel.

Installation

Springdale schools said the swing came in one piece and maintenance took care of leveling the surface before installing it. They also added ground cover and a mat. 

A concrete path was also made to lead to the swing.

  • Linda Childers Knapp Elementary School
  • Monitor Elementary

How were these schools selected?

The four schools were selected "due to their special education population," according to SSD.

The Springdale School District said "These swings give the students in the district who use a wheelchair for their mobility a place to fully participate in recess.  The swings provided sensory stimulation, promote independence and a sense of belonging for our students."
