UAFS ends shelter in place as search for suspect with active warrant continues

Officials said university police and other agencies are looking for a man who was last seen west of campus on Kinkead.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith (UAFS) has lifted a previously issued shelter-in-place alert for people on campus.

Officials said university police and other agencies are looking for a man with an active warrant. The suspect is described as a white male wearing all dark clothing, according to UAFS.

Units from the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office, the Fort Smith Police Department, Arkansas State Police, and UAFS police are all present on the scene.

No threats have been made at this time, but UAFS said they believe the individual could be armed and dangerous.

A spokesperson with the university told 5NEWS that UAFS got a call from the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office about an individual who was potentially armed heading west from Westark Church of Christ, which prompted the shelter in place alert.

The university advised individuals on campus to take shelter and lock their doors. UAFS issued the alert at 8 p.m. on Sept. 11.

At 9:10 p.m., the university said that the shelter in place was lifted, as the subject had been seen leaving campus. The UAFS spokesperson said the subject was seen on security cameras leaving campus.

"We have no reason to believe he is on campus," UAFS said. "Search continues off campus."

No more information about the suspect's warrant was provided.
