United Methodists lift ban on LGBTQ+ clergy and same sex marriage

A local congregation feels it could make people feel more comfortable in their space.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — On Wednesday, United Methodist delegates voted to repeal the longstanding ban on LGBTQ+ clergy members.

At its first General Conference in five years, they voted to take away the ban of both LQBTQ+ members from being appointed and serving as ministers as well as a measure that wouldn't penalize a church for performing a same sex wedding.

The ban has been in effect for around 40 years.

Past General Conferences of the United Methodist Church had steadily reinforced the ban and related penalties but has since moved a different direction.

"Today is all about choices," said Pastor Terry Gosnell at Trinity United Methodist Church. "The General Conference is not forcing anyone to have a gay pastor or to perform a same sex marriage. If the congregation feels like they want to do that, then they have the choice to do that."

Trinity United Methodist Church has been a reconciling ministry since 2012. This means they welcome all people of any sexual orientation or gender identity.

"There were a lot of frustrated folks here in our community that wanted to make sure that people, especially the LGBTQ community in Fayetteville, and in this area, had a place where they could go," Gosnell said. "We have been open to LGBTQ+ people and all people, but particularly them because they have been harmed by the church."

The changes are historic in a denomination that has debated LGBTQ+ issues for more than half a century at its General Conferences, which typically meet every four years.

Gosnell said these changes will hopefully make people feel more welcomed into their doors.

"I hope that it will give a signal to people that we are a place where you're welcome and not just welcome but affirmed of who you are," Gosnell said. "It’s a day that some of us are celebrating. There are some people that are sad and upset, and I wish them well, and I extend love to them. Because I believe that Jesus loves everyone."

These measures take effect after the general conference ends on Friday.
