More than 7,000 new students for move-in to the University of Arkansas

“It’s festive, but it's also emotional, because we have a lot of parents and guardians who are saying goodbye to their young kids," said Christopher Spencer.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Thousands of students are moving into their dorms at the University of Arkansas this week.

The university hosted a celebration between Humphreys and Yocum Halls on Friday, Aug. 9, to welcome new students to Fayetteville.

After a short concert from the band, school officials helped students move into their dorms.

Christopher Spencer, assistant director of marketing and strategic communications for university housing, said more than 7,000 students are moving this week.

Early move-in started Wednesday, Aug. 7, and general move-in continues through Saturday, Aug. 10.

Spencer said RAs and staff are working to make the move-in process as smooth as possible for students and families.

“It’s festive, but it's also emotional because we have a lot of parents and guardians who are saying goodbye to their young kids, and they’re new students, they’re new Razorbacks,” Spencer said. “… We want to try to make it as smooth of a process as possible for them and try to get them moved in and ready to start their lives here as Razorbacks.”

Spencer said the housing team has a wayfinding system with color-coded arrival routes, that can be found on the university's website

He added that one of the most important roles for housing staff this week is helping new students find a home at the university and make connections with others.

“It's really easy for anybody, not just 18-year-olds, but for anybody to kind of stay in their room a little bit,” Spencer said. “…We want to encourage them, especially the first week; we want to see a lot of mixing and people meeting each other and making those just incredibly strong connections.”

Some students moving in this week will be participating in sorority recruitment, which runs from Aug. 9 until Bid Day on Aug. 17.

Classes start at the university Aug. 19th.
