FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — USPS (United States Postal Service) has announced it will pause its nationwide consolidation plans which would impact the Northwest Arkansas processing facility.
According to Postmaster General Louis Dejoy, the plans are paused for the remainder of 2024. This comes after nearly two dozen members of Congress, including Representative Steve Womack (AR-3) were against the recently announced decision and decided to take action.
Last month, members of Congress asked USPS to reconsider the consolidation explaining that the proposals "dismantle parts of the Postal Service’s robust network that helps distribute mail across the country and places outgoing sorting into more distant facilities," and that this will only result in mail needing to travel further "creating inefficiencies in the system, especially for local mail."
Congressman Womack responded to the news by saying:
“The decision to pause USPS consolidations, including the NW Arkansas Processing and Distribution Center, is a WIN for Arkansans. I’m glad our efforts at the federal and local levels to convince Postmaster General DeJoy to temporarily halt these changes were successful. This ensures that residents and businesses across the region that depend on USPS can continue to count on reliable mail service. I will continue to fight for the best outcome for those I proudly represent.”
